Heading to work while leaving pets at home is a normal part of daily life for many dog owners. Most people imagine their dogs spending the day napping, relaxing, or patiently waiting for them to return.
But thanks to home cameras, many have discovered that their pets sometimes have far more adventurous plans. One dog parent recently experienced this firsthand when they checked their home camera during the workday, only to find their two West Highland White Terriers in the middle of a muddy mess they had created themselves.

The dog video, shared on Instagram by the account @furseasons.westie, shows footage captured from the owner’s home camera. Two West Highland White Terriers named Winter and Summer appear to have found their own entertainment while their owner was away.
On-screen text in the video reads, “POV: You check the cam at work and see this…” The camera footage then reveals the two dogs walking through a large patch of mud they had created inside the home.
According to the clip, the mess came from a bag of dirt the dogs managed to tear open. Another line of text humorously reads, “Please tell me this is AI,” capturing the owner’s disbelief at what they were seeing unfold on their screen.
The video then cuts to the moment the owner returns home. One of the dogs approaches the door and greets them enthusiastically. Meanwhile, the owner pans the camera to reveal the true extent of the destruction.
Mud and soil are spread across the floor, showing just how much digging and exploring the terriers had done while unsupervised. A final caption in the video reads, “Speechless… thanks, Westies,” summing up the owner’s reaction to the unexpected home makeover.

One commenter explained that West Highland White Terriers were originally bred as “earth dogs,” meaning they were developed to dig and chase small animals underground. From that perspective, the muddy situation was simply the dogs following their natural instincts.
