An ordinary afternoon package delivery completely changed a Missouri teenager’s entire weekend plans. Willow Weiss rushed home early to try on her prom outfit, but stumbled into an emergency dog rescue of her own pet, Haavi. According to an exclusive report from People, Weiss left a friend’s house as soon as she learned her prom dress had arrived. A few minutes later, though, it was the last thing on her mind after she realized one of the family’s dogs was nowhere to be found. What followed may have saved his life.

People reports that the incident happened on April 26, when Weiss returned home expecting a quick stop before heading back out. The family’s two Great Danes and a Black Russian Terrier greeted her right away. However, Haavi didn’t.

At first, that didn’t seem unusual because the 8-year-old Bouvier des Flandres was often relaxing somewhere around the house. However, after checking a few familiar spots and still not finding him, Weiss kept looking. Then she glanced out a bedroom window toward the deck.

According to People, Haavi was lying on his outdoor bed and appeared badly injured. Weiss later told the publication that she immediately called her mother, all while trying to rescue the dog and figure out what had happened. There were clues scattered around the property. Blood on the ground. Deep scratches. Signs that some kind of struggle may have taken place before the dog made it back to the deck.

Soon after, Weiss’ mother arrived home. With help from a neighbor, they lifted the roughly 150-pound dog into a vehicle and rushed him to an emergency veterinary clinic. Here, the next several hours were most crucial.

People reports that Haavi underwent a six-hour surgery as veterinarians discovered more wounds than they initially expected. Days later, he was transferred to the Mizzou Veterinary Health Center for additional treatment, where doctors treated a serious infection.

Weiss told People that veterinarians believed Haavi likely would not have survived if he had remained undiscovered for several more hours. Had that prom dress not arrived when it did, she probably would have stayed with her friend until much later.

Thankfully, Haavi is now back home and continuing to recover. And while the dress eventually made its appearance at prom, it’s safe to say it ended up being memorable for reasons nobody could have predicted.
